During the election, I only watch Halalan '10, ABS-CBN coverage at hindi na ako nagaksaya pang silipin kung ano meron sa kabila. Little did I know na nagkakaron na pala nang komosyon because both station using different technology that achieved the same effect.
ABS-CBN, for one, made use of "virtual presence," a feature of an advanced technology called "augmented reality." Here, a view of the TV Patrol World studio is modified by including a live video feed of ABS-CBN field reporter Jorge Cariño through computer-generated imagery. ABS-CBN anchor Ted Failon talks to Jorge Cariño using the virtual presence technology.
For viewers of TV Patrol World, the 3D image of Cariño seemed real -- it was able to capture the reporter's voice as well as the texture of his skin and clothes, as if he was right in front of Failon. GMA 7, on the other hand, made use of a "hologram" to display an image of reporter Howie Severino. Here, live images of a person is beamed to another venue (a studio, for instance) through several cameras. The same technology was been used by CNN in its 2008 election coverage.

It does not show an image as clear as the one made by virtual presence, but the hologram still has its perks. The technology allows GMA 7 anchor Mike Enriquez to see Severino, making their conversation appear natural. Although they employed different methods, both ABS-CBN and GMA 7 were effective in giving Filipinos a more interesting take on politics and current events.
Not a Hologram, but a Hologram Effect?
Even CNN used the Chroma Key Effect on their 2008 elections na pinagmamalaki nang GMA.
Pero heto na yata ang pinakanakakatawang video na napanood ko, ang mag pretend na touch screen ang isang malaking TV at magmukhang tanga sa mga viewers.
